Caligene Dragons, or Halloween 2015 Dragons, are the Halloween breed released on October 31, 2015.

Official descriptions[]

Egg[]

The pattern on this egg’s shell is unsettling.

Hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It skitters around in the shadows, seemingly repelled by light.

Mature hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby dragon. It skitters around in the shadows, seemingly repelled by light.

And look! It has grown wings! It must be close to maturing.

Adult[]

Caligene Dragons have long been considered omens of death—reinforced by the skeletal markings on their bodies. They exert a malignant force on the world around them, causing other living things to slowly waste away in their presence. Caligenes favor the seasons of summer and autumn, disappearing entirely from the forests they inhabit during winter and spring. These malevolent dragons are physically weak, though this is countered by their natural stealthiness and alarming speed—enabling them to close in on large targets quickly and silently to create ambushes from which prey cannot escape.

Appearance/Basic Anatomy

  • Females are taller and more robust than males.
  • Their markings don’t begin to show until they begin fledging. The markings are largely identical, but females sport additional facial markings.
  • Caligenes have four very light sensitive eyes, allowing for maximum field of vision and clarity in darkness. Due to this light sensitivity, it is possible to repel them with bright light.
  • Caligenes can only move about in daylight hours if it is sufficiently dark. The dense canopy of their forest habitats typically provide this.
  • Antler shapes differ between males and females. Antlers on males also tend to be thinner but sharper. These antlers are shed annually during the winter.
  • They are thinly and lightly built to maximize speed.

Hatchling Behavior

  • Caligene hatchlings remain fairly small until they begin fledging, when a significant growth spurt begins.
  • Until they begin to grow their antlers, they are relatively defenseless. Their best chances of survival are to flee on foot or to climb into a tree and out of reach.
  • Hatchlings like to gnaw on leftover bones. In summer and autumn, it is common to find discarded leg bones with tooth marks etched into them.
  • Because they are so vulnerable, Caligene hatchlings are amost [sic] never seen alone, typically banding together with others of their group for safety or warmth.

Adult Behavior

  • Caligenes form groups consisting of a few adult pairs plus their young.
  • Body language forms almost all of their communication between each other, particularly gestures with the tail.
  • Vocalizations are rare; Caligenes are ambush predators, and anything that jeopardizes their position can cost them a meal. They can hiss, chitter, shriek, and growl when necessary.
  • Caligenes are capable of climbing trees, though hatchlings have an easier time of it. For adults, it provides a better observation point.
  • Most often they hunt in pairs or packs to minimize the opportunity for prey to escape.
  • When faced with a fight, Caligenes usually flee. If they can’t get away, their antlers are their best offense.

Habitat

  • Caligenes live in forests, particularly those with dense canopy.
  • They dig dens in the ground, favoring areas around fallen logs or with significant underbrush.
  • Their dens are conspicuous because they’re always surrounded by dead and dying vegetation.

Diet

  • Caligenes are strictly carnivorous. Carrion is acceptable if there’s nothing fresher.
  • Not well equipped for fishing or bird catching, Caligenes stick to hunting large terrestrial animals.
  • Hatchlings will happily climb trees to raid bird nests for eggs. Insects are favorites as well, forming about a quarter of a young Caligene’s diet.

Trivia[]

  • Under legacy breed sort, these dragons sort as "Halloween 2015 Dragon."
  • TJ09 secured four Caligenes with the codes: skull, xbone, 3spky and fivMe.

Additional information[]

I wasn't actually aware calligare was a word, I just modified it from caliginous (also of Latin origin and means essentially the same thing...)! XD

~~
So, "a while" ended being "in a few hours" but anyway...some short bits of info XD

The design is based on this species of death's head hawkmoth. :3

They do have four eyes. Caligenes don't like bright light (like sunlight or fire), so they're principally nocturnal. They don't come out during the day unless it's sufficiently dark (for example, heavy canopy that blocks out a lot of the sunlight).

They communicate largely with body language.

Females are a bit taller and a bit more stockily built.

[Sub-Quote: So, this 'malignant force' they give off- is it a conscious thing, or are they sorta radioactive?]
Conscious. :3
