Seasonal Dragon (Autumn)

Autumn Seasonal Dragons were released on November 28, 2008. They were the second form of Seasonal Dragon to be released.

Like other Seasonal Dragons, the availability of this form is dependent on the seasons in Valkemare, with Autumn Seasonals only produced between the September equinox and the December solstice. Breeding an Autumn Seasonal Dragon during any other season will produce the variant aligned with that season.

Adult[]

Seasonal Dragons take on the characteristics of the season during which they are born. Thus, eggs that are laid in spring match the pink flowers and green buds of spring, and those that are laid in the summer grow to depict the bright green of the forest trees and the yellow of the sun. Eggs laid in autumn display the bright colors of leaves falling from trees, and those that are laid during winter take on the appearance of the icy snow.

Appearance/Basic Anatomy

Autumn Seasonals are sturdy, average-sized dragons with fine brown scales, gold head crests, and underwings and tail frills in a gradient of warm fall colors.
Their scales, some of which look like crystallized leaves, are slightly glossy.
The frilly gradiented tail membrane assists Autumns in gliding on the late warm-air currents.
An Autumn’s bright gold head crest is hard and bony, protecting the dragon’s face. The delicate leaf-gradient frill that runs along the back of the neck is more fragile.
While male Autumns have two sets of prongs extending from their head crest, females have a single, larger set.
These dragons have large eyes in varying shades of bright blue and green, rarely yellow, with round pupils.

Hatchling Behavior

Autumn hatchlings are curious and explorative, enjoying digging into leaf litter and searching for insects and interesting objects.
Adolescent Autumn fledglings can be seen gliding on the wind. They seem to enjoy catching falling leaves on the breeze as they fly past.
Newly-hatched Autumns can be shy at first, but quickly take delight in playing and exploring their environment.
Their attention as hatchlings is easily diverted by insects and oddly-shaped rocks, which they will bring to their parents to show off.
Adolescent Autumns are less prone to wandering around than young hatchlings, but still quite curious, and they learn to fly early on.
The richness of an Autumn’s diet as they grow up affects the vibrance of the coloration of growing Autumns, and as adults, one can determine whether they grew up in an abundant forest.

Adult Behavior

Autumn Seasonals are most active in the fall, and are rather curious dragons.
Autumns live in small family groups, ranging from three to fifteen adult dragons and their young hatchlings.
If an area gets too crowded, the family groups will break off and seek out new territory, as they are territorial, but not particularly violent.
Autumns spend a lot of time exploring and grooming each other, and tend to be rather unhappy if entirely alone for extended periods.
In early spring, individual groups of Autumns aggregate into massive herds to find mates and stake out new nesting territory in preparation for the summer.
When the massive herd disperses, the territories are re-established for the coming year, and young adults form new groups to keep the cycle going.

Habitat

Autumn Seasonals gravitate towards forested foothills as their ideal habitat.
The fallen leaf litter that builds up at the end of summer is ideal for the health of these dragons.
Autumns aestivate over the summer, living off stored fat and becoming largely inactive.
They tend to nest near the base of mountains, where the leaf litter piles up densely to provide plenty of nesting material.

Diet

Autumn Seasonals are largely herbivorous, grazing on ripe fruits, the seeds of grasses and grains, and digging up fattened roots.
They also frequently raid beehives for honey and brood combs, though they will not fight other honey-loving dragons over a hive.
Autumns, like other Seasonals, will opportunistically raid nests of smaller creatures if they happen across them, eating eggs, but do not actively hunt and are unlikely to scavenge from large carcasses.
Autumns are also known to graze on grasses and leaves, but this forms only a small portion of their diet.

Trivia[]

Before the Dimorphism change on March 26, 2010 both genders of these dragons appeared as the male sprites.
Under Legacy Breed Sort, Seasonals are ordered chronologically: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.
