Holly Dragons, so named for the holly leaf visible on the egg, were released in 2007 as the first Christmas Dragons. They may also be one of the most desired dragon breeds in the cave. They were originally an all-male breed. However when bred during the 2008 holiday season, offspring were found to be able to gender either male or female. They were breedable again in the 2009 holiday season. Since the gender option was enabled for the Holly Dragon, Christmas Raffle Honorable Mention winners were able to influence their caveborn eggs, bringing to existence at least five caveborn female Holly Dragons (Holy, Time, WGgnu, WMagi, and holly).

Also in 2008, there was an occasional glitch that would allow Holly Dragons to be bred out of season. The resulted offspring would instantly turn into an ungendered Neglected Dragons. This glitch has since been fixed.

Before the 2009 winter event TJ09 confirmed that there were only 109 Holly Dragons in existence, with one of them in the Wilderness. During the 2012 winter event TJ09 stated in the IRC chat that there were currently more Holly Dragons in existance than Neglected Dragons.

They are one of the few holiday dragons which do not feature a holiday alt. The others being the Yulebuck, Vampire, '09 Valentine, Pumpkin and Black Marrow dragons.

A Holly Dragon was featured on a cookie decoration during the 2012 Gingerbread House Decorating event.

When sorted by "Breed" they are listed as "Christmas 2007 dragon" on a users scroll.
