Howler Drakes were released on April 6, 2014, alongside Glaucus Drakes. As drakes, they can only breed with other drake breeds, and their eggs cannot be bitten by Vampire Dragons.

Official descriptions[]

Egg[]

You hear strange noises coming from inside this egg.

Hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby drake. It almost never stops chirping.

Mature hatchling[]

Aww... It’s a cute baby drake. It almost never stops chirping.
And look! It has gotten bigger! It must be close to maturing.

Adult[]

It is no mystery where Howler Drakes got their names. Though not very bright, these emotive creatures employ an impressive vocabulary of loud chortles, shrieks, and songs to communicate with one another, and almost never stop chattering. Howler Drakes inhabit dense jungles, foraging in the fertile soil for mushrooms, tubers, and insects. When threatened, a Howler will flare its wings to display its bright red eye spots, while letting out an ear-splitting scream.

Appearance/Basic Anatomy

  • They are athletic and solidly built, with strong forelegs and long claws suited for digging.
  • Their earth-colored hide helps them blend in better with the jungle floor.
  • Though they have comparatively large wings, they are not exceptionally strong fliers. Their wings are mainly used as a threat display.
  • They grow a pair of dense, branching antlers used for sparring with one another over foraging rights.
  • They have a rich, earthy smell.

Hatchling Behavior

  • They chirp incessantly, even prior to hatching.
  • Hatchlings are not nearly as ornery as their adult counterparts and love to play with one another.
  • Digging is an innate behavior in even the youngest Howler, but hatchlings must be taught how to climb trees and keep quiet to avoid predators.
  • Hatchlings can be quite destructive compared to adults due to their indiscriminate digging habits
  • Hatchlings will shriek loudly when alarmed.

Adult Behavior

  • Howlers are almost entirely terrestrial drakes.
  • They can fly, but will normally travel only short distances in search of food.
  • They live in small family groups called clans which constantly chatter and bicker with one another.
  • When they feel threatened, Howlers will flare their wings and scream to appear much larger and more dangerous than they are.

Habitat

  • They inhabit dense tropical jungles with fertile ground soil.
  • A howler territory can be identified by scored tree trunks and heavily rooted soil.
  • Howlers will shelter in small caves or excavate their own complex networks of burrows over time.

Diet

  • The majority of their diet is roots, tubers, and mushrooms.
  • They will also eat earth-dwelling bugs such as worms, beetles, spiders, centipedes, and anything else they happen to dig up.
  • If it seems valuable to another animal, they will often try to steal and eat it themselves...just to be sure.

Trivia[]

  • Howler and Glaucus Drakes' release was the first where TJ09 announced that he's going to try out a midday release instead of the "normal" midnight release.
  • On May 21, 2016, Howler Drakes received a major update to their egg sprites, as part of Dragon Cave's 10th Birthday. All drakes released on the site when this event occurred received the same downsizing update. This update was done so that the sprites better fit the breed's description of having slightly smaller eggs than those of standard dragons.

Additional information[]

I don't have a fancy ref sheet for the Howlers but

*dramatic camera zoom*

The Neotropical Dragon is the Howler's sworn enemy. Always trying to steal their mushrooms. *shakes fist*
