Hey, and welcome back to the wiki! Just wanted to pop by and advise that since you've been here, I've got a Wikia-approved bot to run category & licensing on new images, that way it doesn't flood the Recent Activity page (and helps save us some time too!), so you don't have to worry about doing that on your own :)
Second post in the event topic. Be assured that you're not the only one who doesn't want to risk the wiki's accuracy. ;) Rubyshoes just quoted the second post of the topic in her closing post, and quotes do not update when the original post is getting edited. :)
Hey, I know it's been a long while since you last logged in but thought I would leave this anyway. I wanted to know, under what information you added the biome "Desert" to the Sunrise and Sunset dragons' pages? I'm trying to work out if it was an error on the part of users or if the biomes got changed at a later date (so I can add that to the article). Thanks and hope all is well! :)
I added the desert biome to their pages back when I was trying to sync all biomes we had on the wiki with the "Where's that dragon? Which Biome?" topic on the forums. :) But I think that with the Encyclopedia, we now have a much better "biome guide" when it comes to things like this. ^_^;
So it's been almost a month since my last reply to the message; I've done the suggested changes to the template box. I'd really like to get this project moving forward so it can be implemented alongside the new infoboxes- please let me know what you think of the updated design and if you agree that we're ready to move forward (MisunderstoodDreamer has been invited to this convo too), as it's been a long time that the feature has been placed on the DC site, and the wiki really needs to catch up. Cheers!
I was updated by Nyastara about the new Infobox some time ago, I'll past here what I said her back then ;) *searches into massive PM archive*
"I actually think it's really nice and more detailed than the older, plus I'm happy that finally we can have both the adults in the same box and not just one, this thing has always bothered me :P Maybe I would just do a pair of edits (since I've seen Taliseth has changed it in the meanwhile): ~I think that the idea of putting the egg's description into the infobox too isn't bad. The infobox should provide basic and essential infos on the breed and one of the most important thing is the egg description, actually. As it is now, I would put the egg on top, below its description, then the test bar and below it the adult sprites. Keep me updated on this, I may give an hand on updating the infobox ;) Maybe we could even divide the work between us, if the other admins are willing to give a hand (I don't know how many of us there are now ), I mean, you work on dragons from A to H, me on dragons from I to P, others continue from Q until to Z."
I haven't changed my idea since then, so the quote above here is still valid :)
But I've missed the update on the Encyclopedia box :P Do you plan to include it in the Dragon's page (in a button like the one for Prize codes) or do separate pages with a proper category "Encyclopedia"?
Well, I find the template pleasant to see and tidy :) But for having a better idea I guess we should see it filled and complete. Would you mind making a test and filling it with Carmine Wyvern's Encyclopedia page infos? It's the most complete between the shortest Encyclopedia pages I've found :) If you haven't time I'll do it myself, just let me know ;)
Also, do you plan adding the Dragon sprites to the Encyclopedia template too? If so, maybe a single screenshot of the sprite sequence as it's showed on the page will do :) If you plan do do a separate page for the Encyclopedia entry this would be an obliged step :P
That's everything I have to say for now :3 Let's see what the other guys think and then let's go on. If we are going to split the updates work I'm willing to take my part and do it, accordingly to my rl chores :P A bit each day and the work will be done ^_^
As for the infobox, I do remember when it used to have the egg description in it as well and remember it looked really cluttered/intense- the infobox is meant to be something short and sweet with quick stats of the dragon. I feel like if the egg description was something people were putting priority on when looking at a dragon, they'd go to the Which Egg is Which page. That said, you have a good point in that it's one of the most important aspects of the dragon and that's something the infobox is meant to convey.
No, the Encyclopedia template pictured there is strictly to house information on each dragon's article in a simple yet attractive manner. I remember discussing with Nyastara regarding making separate articles for the Encyclopedia entries and I really think that would be a bad idea; nothing is more annoying that trying to find information on a character (or in this case a dragon) and finding that it's scattered on different parts of the wiki rather than compiled all in one article. I've seen other wikis do this before and they got a very bad reception for it, and I don't want this wiki to follow suit in that; I want people to be able to find all the information about the dragon they're looking for in one place. Easy! :) As for the category, I agreed with Nyastara in saying dragons that have Encyclopedia information available can have the article added to an Encyclopedia category of some sort so if people want to see all dragons that have published entries, they can just go to that category and everything is there. As for the sprites, I really think that's a bad idea for 2 reasons: 1) It's a lot more work for us and 2) The sprites are already available not only on the article but on most of the site (Dragon Types, Rarity Guide, Which Egg is Which, Dragon Sub-Types...), it seems really redundant to re-post them.
In any case, you're right about having an example will make things clearer to work with. I've chosen the Pink dragon to do an example as it has an Encyc. entry as well different M/F sprites so we can see how that looks with the new infobox (I'm excited about being able to house both sprites too!). Pink Dragon preview! If you feel that there isn't too much going on with the infobox, we could ask Taliseth about adding in the egg description under the egg, but it's a fine balance I think. (Oh and obviously when this gets released, the element affinity categories won't show as a red link anymore ;) )
Basing on my personal use of the Wikia, when I don't remember an egg description I go directly to the breed's page and read it, so having it on top in the infobox would be handy, but it's just my taste. Let's hear what others say :) However, if the lenght/size is an issue, we could set it in a smaller font so it takes less space.
Fine then. Anyway I see the test page as a bit "cluttered" and long :P Keeping in mind that some dragons have other "additional infos" than the Encyclopedia entries (like infos given by the spriters on the forum or various facts) I was thinking to make a separate section called "Encyclopedia Entry" then put the infos (and the banner) under a button like in Prize pages. The sprites were needed in case we were going to make separate pages for the Encyclopedia, if the page is the same then there's no need for repeating them :)
Hmm in a smaller font, it may work out. I'll ask Taliseth about an egg description in the infobox.
Edit: Taliseth came up with a very cool alternative; hover-over text which shows the egg description. I love it; adds the egg description to the box and for those with long descriptions, doesn't clutter the box. It's up on the Pink example now :)
And you're right, especially with articles that have concept art/info, the articles get too long. I've added it as a sub-heading of the Additional Info. bit, and hidden it inside a button. Let me know how that looks- I don't know whether it looks better above or below any additional breed info. I've added a filler line to this test page so you can see how it would look.
Edit: On better inspection, it didn't look too good under the sub-heading like that. Did some more fiddling, see how the final thing turned out (actual template is in use now). I've added information from the Solstice page as filler so we get a more accurate picture of what it would look like with real info there.
The hover idea is clever, but honestly I'm in love with the smaller font option. And since we are forced to add a text line under the egg the same ("hover for description") I would rather prefer the egg description rather then something "stranger" to the dragon's infos :P
As for the Encyclopedia entry, it looks way better now ^_^ People aren't forced to scroll a huge page for looking at things if they aren't interested in the Encyclopedia infos, and moreover it isn't a spoiler for people who still have to unlock them ;) I would keep them at first place in the Additional Infos section, since they are official in-site infos, but it looks a bit... undertone? Maybe we could valorize it in some way :P What if we put the button in a frame or table box?
Anyway mine are just suggestions, please don't pick my words in a bad way! I really appreciate the work that you and Taliseth are doing, if you decide something else I'll be content the same :)
I've added another infobox to the same page that has a larger egg description under it so you can see as a preview. Maybe I pay too much attention to detail, but the long string of text reaches out further than the box's bars, breaking the bar's illusion of separation and visually symmetry. Likewise, while this long description means the two lines of text don't look that different length-wise, other shorter descriptions may have one or two words that create a new line, having a super-long line of text above and then a couple of words below it that again breaks that symmetry. The "Hover" line text forms a great triangle shape with the bar below and egg on top, not to mention will allow uniformity across all articles. Am I being a quack or does someone else notice this too? o___o
Hmm, I'm not sure what to add to it really, and I see where you're coming from. But if we make the button something extravagant, doesn't that defeat the purpose of having the nice Encyclopedia template hidden in the button? (If that makes sense- I know the button is to hide the long line of text, but it also encompasses the 'pretty' part of the template meant to show it off which is what you want to add to the button.) Maybe making the button bigger using margin padding if that's possible? (Looking up some stuff at the moment, perhaps I can make a custom button or something...)
I'm thinking that after the main kinks of the templates are smoothed out, that we take this all to the forums and get members to comment on what they think. I'm still learning about the community role aspect wiki admins play and forget about it sometimes as a result, but I think it would be good to get more community involvement in the projects we under take :)
Sorry it's been so long; take another look at the article now :) There's a new button and section for the Encyclo. entry. The button's not that flash so as not to detract from the Encyclo. template graphics but big enough to attract attention so people will be drawn to open it up. I'm undecided on the font though.
Took me long enough, but I finished a prototype box to display Encyclopedia info in- Link!
I think it looks best when placed under the Adult description section of a dragon article. I've asked Taliseth to have a peak at this prototype as I really liked their new infobox (which we can implement at the same time we introduce the final encyclopedia box as the infobox has the elemental affinities info that the encyclopedia box won't have).
Thoughts? Comments, suggestions? Also, should we attach a category to this template for "dragons with encyclopedia entries" (a shorter name?)?
Using another font, because it's a little bit difficult to read and users with bad eye sight could have problems with it. (I personally love Gothic/Medieval fonts)
About the placement in the article:
With adding the box beneath the adult description users would see a massive load of text at the top of the page, where I personally think only the basic information schould get displayed, such as intro, info box, descriptions and sprites.
Therefor I would suggest to add the box between the "egg sequence" and the "additional information".
Adding a category:
The only category I would add to the template is the Category:Article management templates.
For dragons with additional encyclopedia information I would add a category to their article, like "Encyclopedia".
Ok I will work on fixing the points you made- thanks for the feedback! And sorry for the confusion, I meant attaching a category to the template that would add the article to that category, not about specific categories for the template itself :P So I'm well in accordance with your comment there.
Sorry for the long wait guys, but the box has been updated :) Width now falls under 700px, and the font has been changed for a more simpler one.
In addition, I've taken the raw code and tried it in previews of dragon articles to see where it can best be placed. If placed between Egg Seq. and Additional Info., then it will require it's own heading like ==Encyclopedia Information==. I realise that this implementation kinda makes the title bar redundant, so I propose adding the Encylo. box to the top of the Additional Info. section, with added info from the artist(s) following after the box.
Hey there, I replaced the banner you uploaded with the one with text on it. Don't worry it has nothing to do with your browser, TJ just doesn't include the text to the image anymore. Therefor I save the image, plus make a screenshot of the banner with the text and then line them up in photoshop and then cut the text from the screenshot and add it to the "bare" release banner. Voila, release banner with transparent background. ;)
With the name of Gray Dragon breed now officially (sort, encylopaedia name, and breed description) being "Storm Dragon", I tried to reflect that on here. I've used Special:WhatLinksHere/Gray Dragon to change most of the non-redirect links already, and changed the alphabetical ordering on pages where this is the case. Unfortunately, the "Storm Dragon" redirect was edited after its creation, making it impossible for me to move the Gray Dragon page there myself. This, and the changing of the redirects associated with the current name, are all that needs doing now, as far as I can see.
Thanks for reminding me on this- saw someone made the edit to the description a while back but had forgotten about needing to change the actual article name. Thanks so much for making all the changes on the wiki- I'll swap around the article names as you've said and get to changing the file names too :)
Right that should be all the name changes done :) If you happen to find a broken file link anywhere though, you can find the correct file names on the article itself to change it. There are some sprites though, and some pages, where I've retained the Gray name because they were past events and at the time of the event, that was the name they were known by. They all redirect to the Storm Dragon article though. Thanks again for your help on this AnselaJonla (and for reminding me haha)!
I completely forgot about the Easter event (presume it'll start on Sunday?), I'm going to start creating the March release articles now so that the CBR page can be prepared for the event. Just double check I don't forget to add them on any pages :P I've put them under Uncommon rarity for the time being, as I can see that every 5min drop does bring a bunch out but they are appearing as rare because they get snatched up so fast because of their novelty. Perhaps you might have a better idea as to their rarity or can change it in time?
Yeah sadly I'm not going to be much help for this event as I practically have no more internet access. I finished the articles last night at 2am sitting outside my family's house to be able to reach the wifi but the connection in general is just really bad anyway .___.
Uhh thank you for your offer. :D
You could take a look at this. I'm collecting all the egg references there, if you find any feel free to add them. :)
I think that would be it, since we've got all eggs and the new FoE article is nearly finished and is only waiting to get the references added.
I cleared cache, cookies, used another browser and PC. But it's not just that, I have some wiki applications wich normally get applied to all wikis except to this one... so I contacted wikia about this and they told me that it's an issue with the java script coding. Therefor I will have to check the coding there...
