Vampire Dragons were released on Halloween 2008, the first Halloween Dragons to be released. They filled the cave with their strange, rotten eggs. There was also much drama on the forums, as some of the eggs and hatchlings were rumored to have killed other dragons. This was later disproved as TJ confirmed that the affected individuals' dragons were actually killed as a punitive measure due to them exploiting a glitch intentionally. Despite this revelation, many killed the eggs to get them off their scrolls, as they could not be abandoned.
Vampire Dragons can still be obtained. They cannot breed through "normal" means. They possess a breed specific action, more commonly referred to as a BSA, called Bite, which allows them to create other Vampire eggs from ordinary eggs every 31 days. Unbreedables, Drakes and dragons that can only mate within their own breeds cannot be "turned" by the Bite BSA, but all other eggs currently can. Success percentages before June 2011 were: 50% chance the egg bite is successful and you get to keep it, 25% chance the egg bite is successful but automatically abandoned, and 25% chance the egg is killed. Since the introduction of the new 5-letter dragon codes, the success rates of biting have apparently been tweaked. TJ09 indicated that he never guaranteed the 50/25/25 ratios. Some have speculated that the current chances are approximately 90% kill, 5% keep, 5% repulse, but these numbers are still based on anecdotal evidence and must be taken with a grain of salt. Only eggs with more than 3 days left can be bitten.
Also, Vampire Dragons cannot be shown on an incubator, as a joke since Vampires don't show up in pictures or have reflections.
Since the change in December 2010, Vampires have a lineage link displayed on their view page and a link to the dragon that bit them.
Unlike the other Halloween dragons who get sorted as "Halloween dragons" by the "breed sort" option on a scroll, Vampire dragons get sorted as ... Vampire dragons.
Official Dragon Description
Egg
"This egg is stone cold and smells rotten."
Hatchling
"This hatchling appears to be... dead?"
Mature Hatchling
"This hatchling appears to be... dead? Perhaps not. It seems to be active during the night.""
Adult
"Vampire dragons are members of the undead. They sustain themselves by drinking the blood of others. It is said that they are only "alive" at night, and seem dead or asleep during the day, as they cannot endure sunlight for long periods of time. Vampire dragons can only reproduce by changing the eggs of other dragons, puncturing the shell with their fangs and injecting venom that kills the baby inside."
